Not Your Average Online Course

This program may be a bit different than what you'd expect from an online course. It's not just a pile of videos for you to binge or a lengthy textbook, because I don't believe that's the best way to learn. Many of the people making online courses today aren't qualified -- they just don't have the skill you'd hope for in an instructor. On top of that, little thought is put into the structure of most courses. Typical course-creators will make a list of pixel art subjects, then throw together a video for each one. There's no thought put into the learning process that students go through when starting from scratch, or the best order to learn things is. Instead they go with the "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" approach, by teaching you as many things as possible, and hoping you'll remember some of it.

Not only does a video collections or books leave pacing, scheduling and practice completely up to the student, but it also doesn't provide any feedback or guidance so you know if you're on the right track. Lospec Pixel School is different.

A Better Way To Learn Online

Instead of the traditional online course format, you'll have scheduled classes, assignments, and responsive feedback directly from the teacher. The assignments and live feedback will help you to actually put the things you've learned into practice. Our scheduled classes will help you stay on track at a reasonable pace, to ensure you're actually absorbing the information, not just hearing it. Plus, you'll always be in contact with a teacher that can answer any question you might have.

Optimized For Your Skill Level

The courses you'll find here are separated into three distinct skill levels. Each one is written specifically for people at that level. Advanced and complicated subjects are not included in the beginner level course. Instead you'll practice on improving your fundamental pixel art skills, rather than trying to get a vague grasp on every pixel art topic there is.

How It Works

Each pixel school course lasts four weeks, with two classes scheduled for each week. Each class is focused on a single specific subject.

Classes will take place in the Lospec Pixel School Discord Server. When a class begins, you will be added to a private thread and notified. Each class will contain a reading assignment about the day's subject, (which should take about 10-30 minutes). You will then be provided a list of assignments related to that class, which you are expected to complete and post in the class thread. A teacher will evaluate your assignment, and provide feedback on how it could be improved, clarifying on points you may have missed. You will be expected to revise your work until it's acceptable, at which point you can move on to the next one. It's recommended you dedicate at least two hours to each class, which you can do at any time up to 4 days after the class is posted.

Unlike most pixel art courses or tutorials, we aren't going to dump a ton of info, theory and techniques on you all at the beginning. Right from the start we'll dive in and start practicing essential skills. Each class will focus on one very specific subject in depth, and will build upon the previous ones.

There will be no report cards, grades or diplomas, as I don't believe those are helpful to learning. If you participate in every class, and complete every assignment, then you will learn, which should be your only goal.

Class Schedule

Classes will be held every Monday, and Thursday. They will be posted at 10:00 AM, Eastern Standard Time. Immediate live feedback will be available for 4 hours after the start of class (until 2:00 PM EST), but all assignments submitted within 4 days of the start date will receive teacher feedback.
