“And in that moment, I felt fear… for the last time.”

Cronos @diego-fung This panel is undoubtedly one of the most iconic in the comic book universe. It represents the creation of a human being condemned to become a god, a figure that, as mentioned in the movie, “Superman exists, and he’s American.” However, Dr. Manhattan is far from being a conventional hero; he is more of a reflection on divine nature and the loss of humanity.

Watchmen is one of those works that, whether in its comic format or its film adaptation, transcends the passage of time. Each revisit, each rereading, offers new nuances and details that were previously overlooked. Today, I want to focus on one of those key moments: the panel in which Jon Osterman leaves his humanity behind to definitively become Dr. Manhattan. It is an instant that, both narratively and visually, sparks deep philosophical and emotional reflection. In this fragment, we see Jon experiencing fear for the last time, a feeling that, from that moment on, will be replaced by a logical coldness and an almost inhuman rationality.

Beyond the aesthetics of the panel, what truly resonates is the idea it conveys: the loss of humanity. Jon Osterman, upon transforming into Dr. Manhattan, abandons his emotional connection to the world. He becomes a distant, logical, and purely rational being, transcending even the Freudian concepts of the Ego, Superego, and Id. He is no longer a man but an entity operating on an existential plane incomprehensible to the other characters. This transformation not only distances him from his humanity but also turns him into a passive observer of reality, a god who watches the world without emotional involvement.

As for the design of the panel, my intention was to respect the essence of the original comic, using muted and subdued tones to emphasize the sensation of transformation. I wanted to capture that moment when Jon ceases to be human and becomes something more, something that no longer feels fear or empathy but operates on a higher level of consciousness.

Recently, someone commented on Reddit about one of my designs, drawing an analogy to the Tarot: “The Death card does not mean the end of life, but transformation and change.” This observation struck me as particularly relevant to this panel. Jon Osterman’s transformation into Dr. Manhattan is not only physical but also psychological and spiritual. It is a sudden, radical change that leads him to abandon his humanity and become a being that no longer belongs to the world of men.

In short, this panel is a masterpiece that combines the visual with the narrative to explore profound themes such as identity, the loss of humanity, and the nature of divinity. I hope this design, which I greatly enjoyed creating, fascinates you as much as it does me. Because, in the end, Watchmen is not just a superhero story; it is a reflection on what it means to be human in a world that often overwhelms us.

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you liked the design. I'm currently finishing a Blasphemous design, and it's one of my favorites so far, just like this one, haha.

I'm so glad you liked it. Honestly, I've been wanting to do a design for this wonderful Watchmen panel for a long time.
