Pixel Art Rotator

This tool helps you rotate pixel art to any angle without the blurry, mushy edges you get from normal image rotation - for game development, sprite sheets or personal uses. Everything happens instantly in your browser and your image is never uploaded anywhere. Specialized pixel art rotation algorithms are included, like RotSprite and cleanEdge. To resize pixel art instead, use our Pixel Art Scaler. Note that animated GIFs aren't supported — only the first frame will be rotated.

Algorithm

Pixel Art Rotation Algorithms

Rotating pixel art by anything other than a quarter turn normally smears the crisp pixel edges into a blurry mess. These algorithms rotate more cleanly, and none of them introduce new colors, so your palette is preserved. Whole 90° turns are always exact, no matter which algorithm is selected.

Nearest Neighbor

Keeps original colors

The simplest and default method: for each pixel of the rotated image it copies the closest source pixel. It keeps your colors exactly, but leaves jagged, aliased edges at angles that aren't multiples of 90°. A fundamental technique with no single inventor.

RotSprite

Keeps original colors

A rotation algorithm from the Sonic ROM-hacking community, credited to Xenowhirl. It upscales the sprite (using Scale2x), rotates the enlarged copy, then samples it back down — giving far smoother, cleaner rotated edges than nearest-neighbor while keeping your original colors. The go-to for rotating sprites.

cleanEdge

Keeps original colors

A modern GPU algorithm by torcado (2022). It detects the lines and slopes in your art and reconstructs them at the rotated angle without ever blending new colors, so edges stay crisp and on-palette. Built specifically for clean rotation and scaling of pixel art.
