gawrone @gawrone I push pixels and pluck strings. This was supposed to be called „Terror” and was intended to be about depression. For those who think that treating such serious matters with such a level of seriousness could only lead to kitsch, I had an alternative title, “Depression Sucks”. Every choice here — composition, colours, techniques, themes — was made to convey that state. Those means are used in a very basic way, but it is not very sophisticated either, when depression strips you of all the force, joy, meaning, and hope. If you have experienced it by yourself or observed it in your close ones, and find this image somehow resonating, that would be “cool” [pun intended]. Even if it is unfinished. And I will not be able to finish it. In the end, after using all those means of expression, this is probably the best possible way to communicate depression. By finally giving up.

Oh man. This is my favorite piece of art. It's my desktop wallpaper, on rotation next to your "Human Maggot" and "Crows". But THIS is my favorite. My favorite not just of yours, not just of pixel art, but of all art in the world.

My first thought was that "you should definitely see more art" ;P but I'm very grateful for your enthusiasm and kind message. Comments liek this force me to start another one. Maybe add "Mother" - the newest one in the series to your rotation, and tell me how cohesively they interchange?
NVA-S94
Nah, it doesn't matter how many more works of art I see. It is unlikely that any of them will find the same response in my heart and illustrate my condition over the past decade in the same way.
I'll definitely add "Mother" to the rotation and conduct observations :)

This is impressive and purely mind-blowing. All the passion and intense emotion embeded totally shines through, and is present

Thank you very much. Sometimes complete lack of emotion and passion is the most intense experience.

This is insane, absolutely brilliant work! I love the way you did the ocean and the mass of tentacles coming out of it! If you wouldn't mind, I'd be really interested in knowing a bit more about the symbolism you used in this piece.

There are no wrong interpretations. I would appreciate very much if you could share how you read it first. I can share some of my own interpretations in private message if you like.

Yeah, sure thing, I completely get that, art should always be open to new interpretations, regardless of creator intent. I think that's part of why we engage in it as much as we do. That being said, here's how I view the piece:

I think that the ocean represents ordinary life with depression. Everything is dull and monotonous, and there are no clear destinations in sight to look forward to. Just a vast expanse of nothing. The broken ship in the center represents the individual suffering from depression; they've been through hell and back, and yet they're still there somehow, badly beaten and weathered, but alive nonetheless. Above and below the ship we see two things that wish to tear it apart or sink it: the hurricane and the monster from the depths, represented by harsh warm tones and intense blues, respectively. I interpret the storm as a metaphor for life's stressors (deadlines, personal struggles, frustration, etc.), while I believe that the mass of tentacles below represents sadness or misery, and that the hundreds of skeletons frozen in the ice had all been dragged down by it and died.

Again, I just want to reiterate how fantastic this artwork is. I'm not really someone who's used to sharing their interpretations like this, but it has seriously opened up my eyes to some big details in the piece I hadn't paid much attention to before, like the theme of spirals throghout. As for the private message, I'm not really sure where you could send it, since I don't use social media all that much, maybe Reddit? My user is u/nadie-nobody

Fantastic. You have some ideas I naver had. Thank you for this.

As I said I don't wish to share my interpretation publicly, but if you are still interested, you can find me on Pixel Joint or Cara, or Discord, and if not I will find you on reddit (I had no idea you could write PM's there).

Sure, feel free to DM me on Reddit, I'm still interested in hearing your interpretation! I'm not on Pixel Joint or Cara, and I only use my Discord account for hanging out with friends and stuff, so Reddit's pretty much the only place you could PM me. I should really go about setting up some more social media accounts...
gawrone
There is nothing more rewarding, then someone reading something you tried to say. Thank you.
