I was utterly spent—both in the midst of painting and long after I set down the brush. The piece was meant to be far more intricate, with a richer, more elaborate composition in mind. Yet once I finished rendering those two foreground trees, fatigue overwhelmed me; sleep became the only thing I craved. What followed was a surrender to haste—the lake, the distant trees, the cottage, the meadows—all dashed off in weary strokes, mere afterthoughts to an abandoned vision.
